An estimated two-thirds of all Americans are now overweight or obese, and about 25 million people have chronic Type 2 diabetes that’s often caused by unhealthy diets and a lack of exercise. Taken together, these two related conditions are sometimes called “diabesity,” a shorthand term for a public health scourge that gives rise to other chronic diseases like arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and depression. Anyone who develops drugs to safely help people lose weight and control blood sugar has a clear opportunity to tap into a monster potential market, and save the health system billions of dollars.
San Diego’s biotech cluster happens to have core strength in this field, from well-known public companies like Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Orexigen Therapeutics, and Arena Pharmaceuticals to a new wave of startups. Yet the time and expense of diabetes and obesity drug development has been skyrocketing lately, as the FDA has raised the bar ever higher for new drug approvals in the wake of high-profile safety controversies with drugs like GlaxoSmithKline’s Avandia and Abbott Laboratories’ Meridia. We will convene San Diego’s leading entrepreneurs and investors who despite these higher barriers remain committed to finding ways to help the U.S. better manage this long-term threat to public health and wellbeing.
